Open windows are potential safety hazards for young children. In recent weeks, several children have fallen from un-guarded windows opened due to nationwide heat waves. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) data indicates an estimated 3,300 children five years old and younger are treated each year in U.S. hospital emergency departments due to window falls.
Deaths and injuries frequently occur when kids push themselves against window screens or climb onto furniture located next to an open window. Window falls increase dramatically during the spring and summer months but are preventable with window guards like the Guardian Angel Window Guard. Active parental or caregiver supervision and the installation of window guards helps prevent window fall injuries. Screens are only meant to keep bugs out and can not support the weight of a child. Window guards are easy to install and have a release mechanism in the event of an emergency.
To help prevent injuries and tragedies, CPSC recommends the following tips. Use window guards or window stops. Never depend on screens to keep children from falling out of windows. Whenever possible, open windows from the top -- not the bottom. Keep furniture away from windows, to discourage children from climbing near windows. Some jurisdictions require landlords to install guards. Check your local regulations.
