Printer Friendly Specifications

DOUBLE HUNG WINDOW GUARDS

Double hung windows are windows that open up and down. All Guardian Angel window guards for double hung windows run horizontaly and include 4 horizontal bars. These bars telescope to fit various window widths. The example below is the 2335 model, which expands from 23 to 35 inches.

The end posts are 21 3/8 inches high. If your window opens above that, you will need to use a window stop to keep your window from opening above the guard. You could also use a vertical style guard, which covers the entire height of the window. Double hung window guards can not be stacked on top of each other.

There are 6 widths available, see chart below. If your window width falls right on the edge of a range, it is better to go with the guard in the larger width range. For example, if the width you want to cover is 23 inches, go with the 23 to 35 inch model (2335-44H).

Window Width (inches)Model No.
14-171417-44H
17-231723-44H
23-352335-44H
35-583558-44H
58-905890-44H
90-1207320-44H

The "-44H" refers to the number of emergency release buttons and number of bars, respectively. There are 4 emergency release buttons per guard. The H stands for horizontal.

Designed to conform to the safety standards for window fall prevention devices set forth by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM F2090-01a), and recognized by the U.S. Consumer Products and Safety Commission.

  • Diameter of large bar is 5/8"
  • Diameter of small bar is ½"
  • Horizontal bars (large and small) telescope to fit various window widths
  • Window openings should not exceed 4 inches above the top horizontal bar (as indicated on the guard by an arrow)
  • Emergency release button (each guard has 4)
  • Each end post is ¾" wide x ¾" deep
  • End posts screw into window frame or molding from sides or front (4 screws per guard)

Never mount telescoping bars horizontally in a sliding or casement window!

Telescoping bars can only be mounted horizontally in double-hung windows. When mounted horizontally in sliding and casement windows, the window guard can act as a ladder and greatly increase the risk of an accidental window fall.

For casement and sliding windows, guards must be mounted with the telescoping bars in a vertical position. Refer to installation instructions and specifications below for these types of windows.

    CASEMENT AND SLIDER WINDOW GUARDS

The end posts are available in three widths within each height range: 13 inches, 17 3/8 inches, and 21 3/4 inches (see chart below). You may need more than one guard to cover the width of your window. The vertical window guards can be installed next to each other.

Vertical style guards come with 3, 4, or 5 vertical bars and these bars telescope to fit various window heights. The examples following are the 3558 model, which expands from 35 to 58 inches high.

The last two digits in the model number stand for the number of emergency release buttons and number of bars, respectively. For example, the 3558-43V model expands 35 to 58 inches in height, has 4 emergency release buttons and three bars. Vertical style guards have 4 emergency release buttons. The V stands for vertical.

There are 6 heights available, see chart below. If your window height falls right on the edge of a range, it is better to go with the larger height range. For example, if the height you want to cover is 23 inches, go with the 23 to 35 inch model.

Designed to conform to the safety standards for window fall prevention devices set forth by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM F2090-01a), and recognized by the U.S. Consumer Products and Safety Commission.

      News
    08/22/2008
Parents and Care Givers receive Car Seat Safety Information from any number of sources. Unfortunately, the advice can often be conflicting and sometimes dangerous. Many well meaning sources are providing statements such as: “Children over 1 year old and weighing between 20 lbs and 40 lbs should ride in forward-facing car seats.”

This is neither correct, nor the best practice for child safety. While children may ride forward facing at one year and over twenty pounds, for safety reasons they should not do so. Rather, the best and safest practice is to ride rear facing for as long as possible. Children should ride rear facing up to the maximum weight that their car seat allows, or until their heads are within one inch of the top of the shell. This practice is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and has been the subject of a recent article: Henary B, Sherwood C., Crandall J, et al. Car Safety seats for children: rear facing for best protection. Inj. Prev. 2007; 13(6): 398-402.

The Injury Prevention article found that children under two are five times safer riding rear facing. The article prompted a Commentary in the Journal Pediatrics, asking Physicians to promote better decisions than one year and twenty pounds.

Another incorrect, but often heard statement is: “Children ages 4 to 8 weighing between 40 lbs and 80 lbs should ride in booster seats restrained with lap and shoulder belts. A regular safety belt won't fully protect a child this size in a crash.” While it is true that many children should be riding in boosters, the age and weight recommendations above are potentially mis-leading. The word “should” infers that this is the best practice. It is not. Indeed, children should ride in a five point harness for as long as possible. Asking a four year old (or less) to sit correctly every time in a booster is placing far too much responsibility on the four year old for his or her own safety.

Advice can be widely obtained. However, there is no reason to accept advice that fails to maximize the safety of your child.
